Let’s be honest: Instagram is kind of a big deal. With over a billion active users worldwide, it’s become a powerful part of many of our lives. But with so many filters, updates, #OOTDs… it can be a mind-boggling place. Want a few pointers on how to crack it? Let’s start with your Instagram aesthetic.
In a series of lessons, we’ll show you how to keep your IG fresh (minus the stress). Whether you’re starting from scratch or want to up your game, you’re in the right place. But don’t just take my word for it. These Insta experts are here to offer inspiration on getting creative, finding your tribe and building a brand.
Ready to roll? Let’s talk about how to develop that all-important Instagram aesthetic…
Get creative with your Instagram aesthetic
I’ve developed an arty look that people seem to enjoy following, but it took years for me to find my style. I started by adding doodles to images from my iPad. Gradually, I got more creative and confident with what makes me stand out.
“I don’t just think about ‘feeding the feed’ and chasing the algorithm.” @camillaackley
Now, I create artful images that make me, and hopefully others, happy. My advice? Try following arty accounts, designers and illustrators so your feed is full of inspiration and consider how you can incorporate different elements into your own grid. Add a personal touch by finding a unique way of editing images, whether that’s adding frames, fonts or a cool filter from an app like VSCO.
Try different ideas until you find a style you love. Your personal Instagram aesthetic won’t happen overnight so stick with it and the likes will roll in.
Be true to you
My Insta style came from a personal passion. I realised that there was a severe lack of plus size women of colour showing themselves living unapologetically and loving the skin they’re in – and considering the body positivity movement was created in part by plus size black women, I thought it was important for me to share my own journey to self-love and the things I learned.
“Don’t underestimate the power of authenticity and passion for what you’re posting.” @nerdabouttown
Incorporate things you genuinely enjoy and feel strongly about into your visuals and captions. Besides, who wants to pretend to be someone else? Being you is always best. And a little relatability goes a long way.
Be consistent with your Instagram aesthetic
My grid is a cornucopia: an outfit one moment and a tablescape the next, but it’s the bright colours and optimism that keep it united. My technicolour style may not be the on-trend beige or classic, chic grey, but it’s mine and I wouldn’t deviate.
“Think of your grid as a window to your brand; it’s an important opportunity to make a good impression.” @rosannafalconer
Whether you love amped-up saturation or a cool colour wash, decide it and embrace it. You can post all types of images within this – it’s the consistent vibe that will build your Instagram aesthetic and make a visually pleasing feed.
