The rise of the Insta-glammer has our feeds overflowing with new products to buy, tutorials to watch and a new beauty guru to follow every day… So with the ‘gram crammed with everything from brand fans to professional MUA’s, how do you make-up the difference and stand out from the crowd?
Sydney-based creator, beauty guru and talented make-up artist Rowi Singh is making waves with her quirky, colourful creations, prompting people to singh her praises from one end of Insta to the other. We chatted with the beauty guru and quirky creator about gettin’ inspired, saying no to the status quo and empowering others to embrace their you-niqueness…
First thing’s first… How did @rowisingh come about?
I’ve always had this creative inkling and this desire to express myself through art and style. School and Uni never really afforded me the opportunity to be creative in the way I wanted.
I had ideas and opinions that I wanted to share and Instagram allowed me to create my own rules, putting out content that truly felt unique and authentic to me. Not to mention, a really easy and cost-free method to do so @rowisingh was my personal Instagram, but I began to use my platform more creatively.
“I had ideas and opinions that I wanted to share and Instagram allowed me to create my own rules, putting out content that truly felt unique and authentic to me.”
I’d post self-styled beauty looks, infused with culture and a modern aesthetic that seemed to resonate strongly with so many around the world. I’m able to express myself and push boundaries, knowing I have a loyal following supporting me and driving me forward.
Girl, you take ‘make-up artist’ to the next level! How did you develop your style a a beauty guru?
Makeup for me is merely a vehicle for self-expression. It’s not really about the makeup itself, but what you can do with it that I love. I’m a self-taught artist, and I love that I don’t have to follow rules to create something impactful. I liked the idea that I could create 50 different beauty looks with one palette. I loved how I was rewriting the definition of beauty, stretching its meaning with my bold looks.
I’m passionate about being able to visually communicate through my art. My style is a reflection of my own experiences. It’s an ode to my creativity and culture, so it comes quite naturally for me.
What’s your creative process? Tell us how you make the beauty guru magic happen!
Nothing too crazy! I have a notebook full of ideas, and then I’ll face-chart it if it’s complicated. But most of the time I can visualise it in my head, and just go for it. Trial and error is the best way. I’m inspired by anything and everything! Sometimes I’ll visualise my thought processes, sometimes I’m inspired by small things like clouds and trees. I’m very much influenced by my surroundings.
What are your favourite editing apps?
I love the classics – VSCO, Lightroom and Facetune!
As a beauty guru, which looks do you find get the best response on IG?
My ‘look’ series’ get a lot of response. In my latest Disney Princesses Re-imagined series, I recreated traditionally Caucasian princesses as brown. It was really inspiring for other brown women to see themselves represented in such a way.
Do you ever have creative blocks? How do you get re-inspired?
Not too often! But having a break can help me get back into the flow of things. I like taking time out from things so I can appreciate it even more when I jump back in.
What’s the mission behind your vision?
When people visit my Instagram, I want them to leave my page feeling happier. I want them to feel inspired rather than defeated. If I can inspire at least one person to embrace and love themselves, I’ve done my job.
How are you using Insta as a platform for positive change?
Instagram can either be a horrible space or an incredible place. It all depends on how we want to engage with it. I think Instagram is an incredible tool to connect like minded individuals from all around the world. For example, I’m able to connect with South Asian sisters from all walks of earth.
“I’ve created community that revels in cultural pride and I love it.”
One top tip for creating on-point content as a beauty guru?
Find your angle, utilise natural lighting and create something authentic and unique!
What message do you want people to take away from your content?
It’s all about embracing your own idiosyncrasies! Trusting your gut and just being you. I want people to feel more empowered with themselves, rather than feeling like they need to be someone else. My work is bold enough to encourage others to break out of their shell. I love inspiring other brown women to embrace their culture.
